My mom decided she wanted a big screen hi-def LCD TV. Of course, my DH agreed. We got the TV. Of course, we then had to get a hi-def DVD player, cause what's the point of having the TV if you can't get all the benefits? While DH was looking at players, he found one "better" for $100 more than he was going to spend originally. With the new player, of course, you need a $90 "monster cable" (if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about, I don't. I could care less if we had our old 24" tv that we got 10 years ago). Now my mom has decided to upgrade the Dish Network package, to the tune of $20/month (even though we had already agreed that we didn't need to!).
I won't be surprised if I come home to a new living room set to sit on while we watch our great new TV!!
The problem with upgrading

In my personal opinion, right now is NOT a good time to be buying HDTVs. Think about it. High-def DVD formats are expensive. The cheapest I've seen is $300 and HD-DVD and BluRay are still slugging it out with no clear winner yet.
Alternatively, you can have HD channels now, but unless you also have at least 1080 resolution TV, I would personally feel like I am gipping myself out of true HD. And right now, the cheapest 1080p LCD I've seen is about $1500. Almost there, but not yet.
And unless you have all of these componenets together, you'll have a nice TV, but not true, native HD. Which if I'm going to pay, say, 1k to 2k, it had better be!

Boo - They were watching prices for a while before they bought. DH actually bought one tv, but when they got it home, it kept turning off, so they took it back and watched for the next big deal. Last night, DH had a problem with the new DVD player freezing up. Seems there are some bugs to be worked out yet, so waiting is probably the best idea.
