Freecyclin'

September 16th, 2006 at 01:54 am

I made two posts on Freecycle today - one for jalapeno peppers (picked about 6 dozen from the garden today - about 5 dozen more than we could realistically use - and I only picked about half of them) and another for a ton of miscellaneous clothes and other items. Everything has been spoken for except some woman's clothes. I feel lighter already.
The two people who took the peppers - one dropped off a bunch of board games when she found out I had kids and the other offered me to stop by her shop and pick out a little something. I guess what goes around comes around Smile

BTW, any ideas for jalapeno peppers? I make stuffed peppers and salsa out of them, but you can only do that so many times...

dry them, then assemble into the decorative ropes to hang in kitchens. Make fun gifts. I've also used some once to make a very interesting Christmas wreath, using red & green peppers as the "lights". Very cute. But again, just how many of these can you use anyway???

Freecycle some more of them............see what you can turn them into!

Kick up everyday meals, sandwiches, sauces and stews. Wonder drug? Capsaicin is found in jalapeno peppers. You may find medicinal use for them (pain reliever, cough medicine). Check it out.

I agree with both comments. I would can, dry, pickle etc some of the excess. And I would freecycle the rest.

Especially in light of the fact that it does seem you have a nice little " give and get" cycle going. You never know, maybe someone that receives some of your peppers will see you stranded on the road one day and stop to help. Or they may have soemthing to sell in the future, you might want it and get a better deal. They may even remember you when they want to buy or sell a house.

If you decide to pickle them I have a method. Fill a jar with sliced peppers, pour HOT vinegar over them and seal. You can do a hot water bathe with them also.

Is your farmer's market still open? Maybe you could sell the excess.

It is, but it costs $5 to set up a table. I don't know how much peppers sell for - but probably not enough to be worth my time. Great suggestion though!
DH told me he is definitely going to do "something" with what we have left (after giving 7 dozen away on freecycle!). We'll see what he comes up with...
