I cannot believe this...

April 30th, 2006 at 01:21 am

my favorite pasttime...ruined by my own frugality. I kicked off the garage sale season today by hitting a few local sales. After the first three, I realized that there is nothing I need to buy...and very little that I want! I suddenly found myself wondering what I was doing wasting my gas driving around when I wasn't really looking for anything. Grrr...this is how I love to spend my Saturdays all summer long. I enjoy this...so why am I ruining it for myself? But, then, at the next few sales I found three little things that I could use (a pair of like-new shoes for ds2, a huge travel coffee mug for DH, and a game for the kids) for a total of $1.25, so I felt redeemed. Anyway, just brought this up because I was so surprised at myself. I have always been frugal, but I was shocked to find myself at the point where I no longer wanted to accumulate ANY MORE STUFF!
DH and I had a nice (cheap) night out with friends last night. Dinner at Olive Garden: $45 - $35 in g.c. = $10 spent. Shopping at Target: free (used g.c.), Ice cream at Friendly's: $11. Reconnecting with old friends: you guessed it - priceless Smile

DH and I are struggling with this as well. All winter we've looked forward to yardsaling... but are finding we're aggravated with bringing in more stuff and spending money! We will continue to go as there are a few things we are in search of. That's part of the fun of it all!

It is nice to look but I have a ton of stuff in my basement already not to mention the garage. I guess small purchases are neat. It is nice though when you get to a place in your head that says, "enough"!Smile

I like to save everything up, have a huge garage sale and then use that money to buy at garage sales. (Hopefully frugally! and with a cautious eye!) I ruin it for myself sometimes by not even getting out to look and just driving by (which I hate when I have my own sales!) Oh well. You can stock up on clothes for the boys!

I got to that point a few years ago and now I am downsizing the stuff that I do have here!

I too have gotten to the point I buy very little at yard sales. My weekly yard sale expenses are usually less than $10. You just need to change your point of view and accept that you are now a very discriminating yard sale buyer. And thats a good thing.

I look at the yard sale-ing as my time out of the house, as a type of treasure hunt, a time to explore neighborhoods I normally wouldn't see, and as a replacement for such things as going out to movies or to a mall. If you feel its not worth the time & effort, try to make it fun. Perhaps you can get a friend to come along a few times and you could enjoy yourself more that way. Find out if relatives or friends have any special needs - you may be able to get them something nice. I got a large drill press for my father last year. He paid for it and gave me his older small one for my efforts.

As for last Saturday, I got good leather work/dress shoes from Italy for $1. And shirts and tools for a total of $3. If you keep looking there will usually be something worth getting.
